Growing Through Personal Innovation

September 16, 2010

Growing Through Personal Innovation:

In my 25-year career as a business and human resources development consultant, a major focus was on helping companies and nonprofits develop and implement innovative strategies, including crafting solutions to challenging problems. Business innovation usually focuses on propelling sustainable growth, creating value, and meeting evolving needs in the marketplace. A major topic of discussion during several business trips to China, centered on how they could become a more innovative culture. A cultural transformation of that magnitude requires a long term and multi-faceted strategy.

A question we may want to ask ourselves is “How can we, as individuals develop and demonstrate greater personal innovation?” And how can greater personal innovation lead to greater fulfillment and meaning? The good news is that we can develop that capability faster than a company or national culture, although it may come easier to some of us than others.

Personal innovation and self empowerment go hand in hand. The key is giving ourselves the freedom to create and explore new opportunities, ideas and ways of thinking. And most importantly, being open minded and willing to develop an in-depth understanding of new concepts before judging them.

Personal innovation is about charting new territory and creating new dimensions for your life. It’s about vibrancy and being creative about your future. It goes beyond thinking about it. It involves continually invigorating your life and making new things happen for you and others. The objective is to create value, focus on needs outside of yourself, and grow as a person in the process.

Discovering and pursuing a purpose is an important aspect, which can be fulfilled in many different ways. These may include service or volunteering, career activities, the arts, relationships, spirituality, leadership, politics, sports, and philanthropy. The key is to connect your personal innovation with what you love and your passion.

In our lives it is very easy to get stuck in a rut or fall into a routine that becomes less and less interesting, energizing, and stimulating. If you find yourself there or feel you are on the way, explore new avenues, stretch yourself, do the things you’ve been putting off, invest in yourself, create an ever evolving and growing YOU. Empower yourself to live a fuller and more purpose-guided life. That’s the essence of personal innovation.

Tomorrow’s blog will be on “20 Ways to Make Personal Innovation a Part of Your Life.”
